The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ began its 30th Annual “Contemporary Documentaries”series on Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and it will continue through December 7. All the screenings have free admission. The movies will all be screened at the Linwood Dunn Theater at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. (except for an IMAX presentation on December 7). The doors open at 7 p.m. and the seating is not reserved.
The filmmakers will try to be present at screenings whenever possible.
The contemporary documentaries being screened include “Strangers No More” directed and produced by Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon. This film received an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject. It introduces students from 48 different countries that are all attending the Bialik-Rogozin School of Tel Aviv. Many of the students are refugees from war and are all learning to deal with the diversities in their new environments.
“Precious Life” is another documentary that is being shown, it was directed by filmmaker Shlomi Eldar and was produced by Ehud Bleiberg and Yoav Ze’evi. The film tells the story of a Palestinian infant that has a life threatening immune disorder and is awaiting a bone marrow transplant while staying in an Israeli hospital during 2008-2009, during the blockade of Gaza.
