Baltimore Ravens Finalize 53 Man Roster

The Baltimore Ravens are ready for the 2012 season. They finalized their 53 man roster by the Friday, 9pm deadline.

No big surprises in the roster, but tough decisions were made and head coach John Harbaugh is pleased with the results:

“I really, really, really, really like this football team, really appreciate these players,” Harbaugh said. “We have a group of guys that really know how to work, a group of guys that are really very united.”

Waived players:

  • LB Nigel Carr
  • WR Dorian Graham
  • G/T Cord Howard
  • NT Nicholas Jean-Baptist
  • NT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen
  • DE Terrence Moore
  • QB Curtis Painter
  • WR Logan Payne
  • S Cyhl Quarles
  • OLB Chavis Williams
  • G Tony Wragge

Add to the injured reserve:

  • TE Matt Balasavage
  • RB Damien Berry
  • G/C Justin Boren
  • LB Ricky Brown
  • TE Bruce Figgins
  • WR Tommy Streeter

Today they added five players to the practice squad: LB Josh Bynes, RB Anthony Allen, S Omar Brown OLs, Jack Cornell and Antoine McClain.

Of note…

  • Releasing QB Curtis Painter means that the Tyrod Taylor is Joe Flacco’s backup; the third straight season where they have carried two QBs on their roster. The Ravens may use Taylor in running situations this season.
  • They also have six wide receivers on the roster.
  • They chose undrafted free agent running back Bobby Rainey over second-year player Anthony Allen. Damien Berry is on injured reserve.
  • Tight end Billy Bajema will be third on the depth chart behind starters Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson. After suffering injuries in the preseason, both are back at practice and will be ready for week one.

Linebacker Sergio Kindle got another chance to play with the team this season. He is excited about the opportunity:

“Jump for joy and do a back flip if I could,” Kindle said. “I wouldn’t want to land on my head though. I’ll do a ninja turtle roll or something.”

The Ravens may adjust their roster and add waived players from other teams. Harbaugh will see how things pan out:

“All kinds of possibilities are still out there. We will just have to see how it shakes out,” Harbaugh said.
“What we will be striving for is our best 53 for now. And then – you know in this league it is very fluid – nothing is certain. Once you get past the first week, you go to the second week, and you see where we’re at.”
