The Oscars Red Carpet design was vastly different this year, and I sought to talk to someone connected with The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to explain the reason for the difference. AMPAS staff pointed to Joe Lewis.
Lewis’ official title is “Oscars Pre-show Production Manager,” but, as he told me on camera, he’s not the head of design. That said, Lewis explained that they changed the “color palette” and “did away with the fluff and happenstance that we had and got rid of the flowers, and got a little more modern, cleaner, simpler look.”
As to what Lewis job is, he says “The easiest way to explain it is I’m like a general contractor in construction. I’m the guy who goes out. I hire all the crafts. I hire all the trades. I keep everything on time, on schedule, and on budget.”
As to what Lewis wanted viewers to see at the Oscars on television “I just want them to have a good time. Watch the show for the stars. Find the talent, and follow their favorite. That’s all we can hope for”
Stay tuned.
