This video shows why I object to the modern NFL defenses where tall of he linebackers are three yards off the line-of-scrimmage, rather than just the middle linebacker: it’s harder to stop the run. In this play, during the Indianapolis Colts vs Detroit Lions NFL Preseason Game, Dwayne Washington gets a handoff, and basically runs right by the unblocked Colts weakside linebacker. The Colts WLB just ran up and filled a hole, rather than being put in position to down the back for a loss – as would have happened if he were on the line with the defensive end on that side.

This is not the fault of the players, but the coaches: players only do what coaches tell them to do.
