The new Oakland Wing Stop Restaurant on Lake Park was the scene of a crime that was too close to home for this video-blogger. Fortunately, the homicide suspects were caught and arrested tonight, according to Oakland Police, but the event happened just about an hour-and-a-half after I walked into the establishment.

It was at about 10 PM Monday night, and I left FitnessSF with the idea of getting something to take home and eat. I’d never purchased anything at the new Oakland Wing Stop Restaurant on Lake Park, and so I figured Monday night was a good time, since I’d interviewed famed Oakland lawyer John Burris last Friday just as he was buying a meal at the establishment. We talked about the George Zimmerman Trial:

So, for that reason, I entered the Oakland Wing Stop Restaurant. But I didn’t stick around. There were about four groups of people ahead of me, so I figured if the Slice Of Hollywood restaurant might have a shorter line – I’d decided I didn’t want to try and eat a messy chicken wing, when I could have a giant salad at a reasonable price.

So, I left the building.

I figured that I ended up walking by the Oakland Wing Stop Restaurant and on the way home just about an hour before the homicide happened, which I didn’t find out about until Tuesday, and online.

What reportedly happened was this, according to Oakland Police:

On July 1, 2013, at about 11:43 PM, Oakland Police Department Communications Division received an alarm activation at 528 Lake Park Avenue (Wing Stop Restaurant). When officers arrived on scene, they located two employees who were suffering from gunshot wounds. When medical personnel arrived on scene, the employees were pronounced dead…Oakland Police Department Homicide Investigators have released the following information: during the preliminary investigation, investigators have determined that robbery was not a motive in the Lake Park Avenue double homicide that occurred July 1, 2013. Additionally, investigators advised that an arrest was made just before 8:00 AM this morning in connection with the double homicide…This investigation is ongoing; we will continue to update you as information becomes available.

And OPD is still seeking more information:

Captain Toribio will be holding a meeting with area merchants regarding crime prevention, community involvement, concerns and education. Date and time to be announced.

Anyone with information is asked to call OPD Homicide at (510) 238-3821, Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572 or the Tip Line at 777-3211.

That’s scary to know I was just an hour removed from such a crime. I have to admit, I miss Georgia for that reason. It seems crime in Oakland’s a bit too random to be sane, and this has never been an issue before.

Stay tuned.
