A simple email making the Internet rounds characterizes just how dangerous the really nice area of Adams Point can be, and the adjacent neighborhood of China Hill, where the Trader Joe’s in located on Lakeshore. Keep in mind what you’re about to read happened in daylight, not at night:

Hi all,

I want to let you know that a young woman was robbed at about 5:50 pm last night by two men with a knife. She was walking down Jayne approaching Perkins when one of the men stepped out of a brightly colored (teal?) hatchback (civic?). He had gold teeth, African American, about 6’2″, skinny with a black do-rag. He pulled out a knife and told her to give him her purse. She complied and they drove off.

The street was not empty (my daughter and I were talking less than half a block away talking to a man with two dogs).

She was not wearing headphones.

It was still daylight.

The good news is that the victim was physically alright, and the police responded quickly.

Trader Joe’s Car Break-Ins At Trader Joe’s Walgreens

This email details a problem of car break-ins in the Trader Joe’s / Walgreen’s parking lot area:

Neighbors,

The car break-ins at the Trader Joes / Walgreens parking lot have started up again. Two occurred on Monday and another one Tuesday. The parking attendants, security officers, Trader Joes, Walgreens, Sansome Pacific (the property owner) and OPD are all aware of the situation. So far they are occurring at peak traffic times: 6:00pm to 8:30pm. They have occurred in both the 2-level garage and the surface lot.

When you park in the lot don’t leave anything visible in your car. If your car is broken into, call OPD and tell the onsite security officer or store manager. They need to gather as much information as possible about the patterns.

For those of you who are members of other neighborhood email lists, please pass this on.

David

Just best to say not just be careful, but also make friends. Moreover, just because you read that a person committing a crime’s black, don’t think every black person is suspect. I was walking along the Lake two weeks ago, and this young white could actually switched places where the woman was further away from me than the man. In fact, I’d have not paid attention to them were it not for that little weird form of behavior. Then the guy puffs out his chest. I started to just plain crack up, and the next time it happens I will. Laugh. Loud.

In the time before the Internet, people got to know each other face to face. We knew our neighbors. We have to get back to that kind of interaction, because the current way is just plain bad.

Stay tuned.
