Godzilla Producer Brian Rogers was kind enough to grant me this video interview at the Variety 3D Entertainment Summit in Universal City in 2010. At the time, the release date for Godzilla was to be 2012, but Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros, obviously careful not to rush the iconic movie monster into production and then release, took their time. First, they found a more than capable director in Gareth Edwards, and then formed a screen-writing team – David Callaham (“The Expendables” films), David S. Goyer (the “Dark Knight” trilogy) and Max Borenstein (upcoming “The Seventh Son”) – that would seem to point to an extremely dark Godzilla movie.
Now comes the announcement from Legendary Pictures that Godzilla will be released on a perfect date: May 16th 2014. That means, among other things, that Comic Con 2013 promises to be one of the greatest events ever in sci-fi event history. Everyone and their mother will be in San Diego, lining up for what will certainly be a presentation in Hall H, sneaking to get it, hanging upside down from the ceiling, paying-off security guards – anything just to be in the room when the first clip of near-finished film is released.
Personally, this blogger is as excited as he was in 1997, when Roland Emerich and Dean Devlin were promoting their version of Godzilla using a very effective trailer:
The problem with that version of Godzilla was it was 1) campy, 2) featuring a giant Iguana and not Godzilla, who’s about 250 feet taller, and 3) had Godzilla chasing humans that the real Godzilla could wipe out of existence in a 10th of a second.
From the talk with Brian, it’s a certainty that will not happen again. But we have to wait.
Until then we have more teasers to look forward to, and you can bet some great trailers to coincide with the release of The Man Of Steel. But for now, we have this long, rather detailed, and very exciting announcement:
THE ICONIC MOVIE MONSTER GODZILLA STOMPS INTO THEATERS ON MAY 16, 2014
BURBANK, CA, September 13, 2012 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have slated their take on the classic Godzilla franchise to kick off the Summer moviegoing season on May 16, 2014. The joint announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and by Legendary Pictures.
Toho Co., Ltd.’s Godzilla franchise contains one of the most widely recognized movie monsters worldwide, including more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros.
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards, who earned worldwide acclaim for his feature directorial debut, “Monsters.” Edwards directs from a screenplay by David Callaham (“The Expendables” films), David S. Goyer (the “Dark Knight” trilogy) and Max Borenstein (upcoming “The Seventh Son”). Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce, along with Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.
A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. The tent pole film is expected to be presented in 3D.
