Four generations of a Georgia family were evicted at gunpoint by dozens of sheriffs and deputies at 3am last week in an Atlanta suburb. The eyebrow-raising eviction, a foreclosure action, might have been another anonymous descent into poverty were it not for Occupy Atlanta activists who tried to help the family stay in Christine Frazer’s home of 18 years.
In the total story by Alternet, 63 year old Christine Frazer lost her husband, and then her job in 2009, and fell behind in paying her mortgage. DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown feared they would get help from Occupy Atlanta, and so came to evict them at gunpoint at 3 in the morning. That’s both 63 year old Christine Frazer and her 85 year old mother.
This happened as their lawyer was reportedly negotiating with the bank about their mortgage loan. The Obama Adminstration’s program to have mortgage loans restructured only applies for those who have paid their mortgage and are up to date.
But what gets me is DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown coldly says he had to follow the judge’s orders to evict the family. Really, he didn’t have to.
It should be against the law for taxpayers to pay for the wages and salaries of police and sheriffs to evict someone when that money could go to the very people being evicted and save their home. This is nuts, and DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown should be evicted from his job for such a display of taxpayer-funded cruelty.
