Chester McGlockton
The news that Oakland Raiders Legend Chester McGlockton passed away this Wednesday morning at the age of 42 of a heart attack reached this blogger via Facebook just a moment ago. The first memory was of meeting Mr. McGlockton when he came to the Oakland Mayor’s Office in 1997, and then Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris invited me to join him in meeting the Raiders great defensive tackle.

But McGlockton didn’t want to talk about football; he wanted to talk about giving back to the Oakland community, and about his interest in establishing a hamburger business at what was once, and again is now known as the Kwik Way Burger Restaurant on Lake Park Avenue next to Lake Merritt. Much of our talk was about the property, the area, and starting a business in general.

While I pledged to offer the support of the Mayor’s Office, I didn’t hear from him about the business after that. I figured he was busy with NFL Football, but what struck me about talking with him at the time was just how much he was aware that life was more than just football, and he wanted to communicate that to me; I’m certain he told that to his student / athletes at Stanford, where he was an assistant under Head Coach David Shaw.

Chester McGlockton: a great person who will always bring a smile to my face.
