Healthcare Advocates To Hold Protest Rally At Fundraising Event For Newly-Elected Congressman John Faso At Upscale Fort Orange Club
Concerned New Yorkers Continue to Sound the Alarm About What’s at Stake as Congress Moves to Eliminate Affordable Healthcare Coverage
WHAT: Protest Rally at Fundraiser for Congressman John Faso. While healthcare advocates and everyday citizens are worried about how to save affordable health care for millions of Americans, newly-elected Congressman Faso, who has been in office for not even 2 months, is already holding a fundraising event at the upscale Fort Orange Club in Albany. (Tickets start at $1,000/person for a reception and dinner.)
WHY: Extreme right-wing elected officials in Congress are determined to eliminate affordable, quality healthcare. Their actions would cause 30 million hardworking Americans to lose healthcare coverage and also, would threaten the economic viability of the healthcare institutions that serve our communities. The recently released Congressional plan does not protect healthcare coverage — it destroys it! Protesters are calling on Faso to commit to standing up for affordable healthcare for all and ensuring that tens of millions of children, seniors, and working adults, including 117,959 residents of the 19th Congressional District that he represents, will not lose their healthcare coverage, if the Affordable Care Act is repealed.
WHEN: Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: In front of the Fort Orange Club, 110 Washington Avenue, Albany
Beverly Miller, a Rensselaer County resident, healthcare worker and member of 1199SEIU said, “The plan that Congress introduced will throw the healthcare system into chaos on every level. Hospitals in Congressman Faso’s district could lose up to $28 million per year in federal funding. And make no mistake about it, there will be reductions in Medicare payments to every nursing home and home health agency in every region of the state, with big consequences for the most frail and vulnerable members in our families and communities. We can’t afford to meet with Congressman Faso at his fundraiser, but we can do everything possible to make sure he is listening to his constituents. Congressman Faso and his colleagues need to show us a real plan that guarantees hard-working women and men, seniors, children and people with disabilities can keep the coverage they currently have, including Medicaid, protects against insurance companies denying care or charging more, and makes healthcare more affordable for all.
“The rich people inside this fundraiser are interested in one thing – making more profit – no matter the cost to our communities,” said Phil Markham, a member of Citizen Action of New York. “If Representative Faso wanted to represent his constituents, he’d be out here listening to the needs of voters, not in there listening to those who can afford to write him a $2,700 check.”
A Few Highlights Of The Congressional Plan:
House Republicans have doubled down on repealing Medicaid expansion, and commit to even deeper cuts to Medicaid that would affect all states, not just expansion states.
House Republicans make cutting taxes for the wealthy, pharma and insurance companies a priority. They insist on repealing revenue provisions that provided two-thirds of the financing for the Affordable Care Act.
The recently released document creates a new set of problems by requiring cuts from Medicaid through the caps/block grants to make up the lost money.
Block granting or capping Medicaid is not a solution – it shifts costs from the federal government to states putting seniors, children and people with disabilities at risk of losing their health coverage. Eventually states would have to cut services and eligibility for the millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and families that rely on Medicaid for quality health care –to help pay for priorities, like tax cuts for the wealthy.
Rural areas will particularly be hurt by cuts to Medicaid because these funds have helped keep rural hospitals in business. Rural hospitals are often an economic lifeline for a community, not to mention the only choice for people when they get sick.
