Jim Harbaugh Leaves SF 49ers Wins Last Game 20-17.

Jim Harbaugh coached his last game with the San Francisco 49ers and won 20 to 17. He left with class, and added an extra win to his lofty total of 45 wins and 19 losses. Consider that over his four years with the team, Coach Jim Harbaugh took the 49ers to the NFC Championship not once, or twice, but three straight times – that’s a record that not even Bill Walsh, who created the modern image of the 49ers, could match.

What happened? Well, for one view, I point you to a great blog post by Mike Freeman over at Bleacher Report. Mike explains that the main issue, according to his sources, was a difference in how to deal with players in legal trouble, with Jim Harbaugh wanting to take the harder line.

For another view, a post that was said to have been written by Jim Harbaugh’s son is going around Facebook. It reads , according to a Twitter photo, that they, meaning Jim Harbaugh and his family, knew the front office would be difficult, and had choice words for the fans at the new 49ers stadium, explaining that they did not know or care enough about the game to be the kind of real fans they would need to win games. There was no “12th man.”

But what bothers me most is that between Joe Lacob and Mark Jackson, and Hue Jackson and Mark Davis and Reggie McKenzie, and now Jed York and Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco Bay Area football and basketball teams seems to be plagued with owners that are so involved with their teams that they don’t give the head coach room to actually run the organization.

By contrast, the Dallas Cowboys, when they were owned by Clint Murchison, were such that Tom Landry was the head coach and boss of the football side of the organization. Business was handled by Tex Schramm. The pair, with Dallas Personnel Director Gil Brandt, produced the most consecutive winning seasons in NFL history: 20 years.

Well, Jim Harbaugh can say he had three, at least. But those days seem long gone, sadly.
