Why I Defriended KQED Forums Michael Krasny On Facebook

Michael Krasny, the long-time host of KQED’s Forum, is someone I have known since 1993. Between 1994 and 2008, I was a guest on Forum six or seven times. But he’s not had me on since 2008, and yet I’ve covered the Oakland Mayor’s Race several times, made more video-blogs about Oakland and Oakland Politics than anyone else on YouTube, started Oakland’s first blog, had Oakland’s first and perhaps only blog credentialed twice for the Democratic National Convention, was on the CNN / YouTube Democratic Debate in 2007, and was Oakland’s first YouTube Partner.

And there’s more I could list.

Inspite of that, not only has Michael Krasny not reached out to contact me, but when I brought up the subject in 2012, when I turned 50, he basically said who was on the show was not up to him. But I don’t believe that because, well, he’s the host of the show.

There’s an awful black / white media divide in Oakland, and Michael Krasny sadly plays right into it. In thinking about this, I realized the only media people I tend to talk to are those who reach back to me, and they all tend to be black.

The white guys who cover Oakland politics only resort to juvenile mentions on Twitter. They have small followers; there’s no way I’m going to subject my over 100,000 followers to the crap talk they sent to me on Twitter – so, in some cases, I’ve blocked them.

But this year I’m completely done with them and the organizations they represent. They expect me to help them when they break a story, but they will not source me. So, I’m treating them just like they treat me.
