Cléver Jiménez Cléver-Jiménez , in a shocking story from Plan V, says that Ecuador President Rafael Correa wants to kill him.

If you recall, Cléver Jiménez is an elected official in Ecuador who was accused of, among other actions, giving his emails regarding the Ecuador lawsuit against Chevron to Chevron.

To recap. this is what I blogged on January 21st:

Rafael Correa orchestrated the jailing of Ecuadorian Assemblyman Cléver Jiménez, and for libel and slander and is having him investigated for the alleged “intercepting of confidential government documents” associated with Ecuador’s lawsuit against Chevron.
If you want a window into what could have happened to an Ecuador judge if that person ruled against Ecuador and for Chevron, the Cléver Jiménez matter gives you one. Ecuador President Rafael Correa is Chris Christie on steroids and unchanged by anti-corruption laws, because Ecuador doesn’t appear to have any.

The libel and slander charge came after Cléver Jiménez had accused Rafael Correa of orchestrating a faked armed raid where the president was rescued during the police uprising on September 30, 2010.

Now, in Plan V, it’s reported that Cléver Jiménez lost his appeal of the charges and faces going to jail in Ecuador for 18 months. There, he believes he will be killed, and has already received death threats. “The government plan would incriminate me, put me in jail and then kill me,” he said via translated comments.

Cléver Jiménez says it’s his duty to expose government corruption, but what he’s done is given the World the best window yet into how Ecuador President Correa bullies his people into saying his desired message, carrying out his objectives, and saying nothing critical of him in the process.

Cléver Jiménez called Rafael Correa a liar with a large ego. “There are many cases (of corruption),” he said. “I have reported in all economic areas of the country, in the construction of buildings in the provincial courts around the country has increased at twice the price of construction per square meter. The international trade in crude which the country continues to lose two to three dollars per barrel of oil. Report which has been corroborated by the Comptroller. Report Esmeraldas refinery, Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric. Complaints in telecommunications, cellular telephones, Duzac case…”

Cléver Jiménez told Plan V he may seek political asylum. I certainly hope he does.

Stay tuned.
