Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s CEO, returned to TechCrunch Disrupt last week for an interview with TechCrunch Founder Michael Arrington that lasted for about 20 minutes. Aside from the questions about who’s smarter, Larry Page or Mark Zuckerberg, the real news here was what Mayer said about the NSA. This five minute video clip starts with Mayer responding to Arrington’s questions about Yahoo’s lawsuit to the National Security Agency, or “NSA.”
Yahoo filed suit to gain permission to make public the number of data requests the tech giant receives from the NSA. However, Marissa Mayer artfully dodged any direct talk about the lawsuit, nor did she side with Michael and say the NSA was doing evil, instead choosing to explain that not following NSA requests and releasing classified information is an act of treason punishable by a trip to the hoosegow. That led Arrington to ask “So, think you’re shareholders would like it if you ran Yahoo from jail?”
But if you think about what Mayer said, then Edward Snowden has committed an act of treason. Arrington jumped the shark in missing the chance to ask her about her view of Snowden’s actions. Given what she said, the only logical response would be for her to say he committed treason.
