youtube-geek-week YouTube launched a concept called “YouTube Geek Week” on August 4th (my birthday) and running though August 10th.

During YouTube Geek Week more than 100 of the top YouTube channels will show new videos and all-new series premieres, as well as some pretty creative YouTube collaborations to help fans everywhere discover what YouTube calls their ‘inner geek.’

YouTube says that each of the YouTube Geek Week days will have a special theme with specially curated content such as “Blockbuster Day” with host Freddie Wong and “Super Day” with Stan Lee’s World of Heroes channel. For more information, please visit www.youtube.com/geekweek.

My issues with what “Geek Culture” has become – little to do with science and space exploration and colonization, and too much do with mindless fantasy – aside, here’s the list of activities for each day of this week.

Blockbuster Sunday: A celebration of the iconic characters, movies and shows that define geek culture–plus a spotlight on the best original YouTube sci-fi, fantasy and animation. Hosted by FreddieW in the U.S., with new content from Tomska in the U.K.
Global Geekery Monday: Anime from Tokyo, comic book heroes from Delhi, and a celebration of “Doctor Who.” Explore geek culture from around the world. Hosted by YOMYOMF in the U.S., and including a special new episode of the British cult children’s TV show “Knightmare.”
Brainiac Tuesday: Science, education and knowledge channels that make YouTube the world’s biggest platform for learning. Hosted by Veritasium and The Spangler Effect in the U.S., with an epic stunt from Head Squeeze and Flow from the U.K.
Super Wednesday: From hilarious parodies to real-life superpowers, explore superheroes, the supernatural and the super-weird. Hosted by Stan Lee’s World of Heroes in the U.S., and you won’t believe what Fast Furious & Funny have done with an old Nissan in the U.K. Plus, released exclusively for Geek Week, the trailer for Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World.”
Gaming Thursday: A gamers’ paradise, with live play-throughs, video games in real life, game-inspired original series and much more. Hosted by Machinima and Maker Studios’ Polaris in the U.S., with a Guinness World Records gaming attempt live stream from the U.K.
Fan Friday: Sci-fi-themed cooking, incredible cosplay and impassioned nerd debates as YouTube’s biggest fans take center stage. Hosted by Felicia Day of Geek & Sundry in the U.S., with an ultimate geeky quiz by Crabstickz from the U.K.

YouTube Geek Week And Giant Robot

YouTube Geek Week also features, though not front and center, the story of WIRED and Stan Winston Studios’ Giant Robot. To help get out the word about this amazing real life Iron Man of entertainment, here are two of a three-video set I created from my time watching Matt Winston of Stan Winston Studios and his crew assemble the Giant Robot concept, and talking with WIRED’s Scott Broock about how the idea came to be:

MARVEL Comics Thor: The Dark World

And what conversation about geeks and YouTube Geek Week would be complete without Stan Lee and the Marvel Entertainment Universe he and Jack Kirby created. Specifically the upcoming Thor: The Dark World:

10 Super Heros You Never Heard Of

And Simon Pegg (Star Trek: Into Darkness) and Nick Frost get into the YouTube Geek Week act with 10 SuperHeros You Never Heard Of from YouTube Channel Alltime 10s:

And there’s more from YouTube Geek Week.

Stay tuned.
