“Alabama Crimson Tide Football Players Arrested For Robbing Beating Student,” is a horrible headline and even worse is what Eddie Williams, Tyler Hayes, D.J. Pettway, and Brent Calloway are said to have allegedly done to fellow Alabama student Samuel Jurgens. The thing that makes one take away the “allegedly” tag is that all of the players admitted to the crime.
The Alabama Football Crime also sheds light on a problem around the country, especially here in Oakland, California, where a number of robbery and assault crimes are done by young black and Latino men to whites, male and female. It’s not right, and seems to be the child of some idea that whites are more vulnerable.
This is not to say that crime is a racial issue in this way – not at all. But it is to point to a terrible dynamic that’s as much a product of perceived wealth difference as anything else.
The video’s story has to be corrected; they also attacked Caleb Paul in a separate incident (yes, Paul, too, is white). In the other crime, it’s reported that Williams hit Paul with punches to the head and face and all the while Hayes and Pettway waited in a car and were said to have knowledge of Williams’ intent to attack Paul. Eddie Williams stole Caleb Paul’s wallet, which contained cash, what is called a “University of Alabama student action card” and a number of credit and debit cards.
But the deeper bottom line is that Eddie Williams, Tyler Hayes, D.J. Pettway, and Brent Calloway beat up two fellow student, and so bad that at least one of them, or both, could have died.
Here’s one blog’s, the Crimson and White’s report, of what Jurgens said happened:
I apparently called (friend) Chris (Burks) while in that state,” Jurgens said in an interview with The Crimson White on Tuesday night. “I don’t have a recollection of that, but I told him something. Something bad has happened to me, I remember thinking before I faded out again.”
Burks said Jurgens sounded delirious and repeated “I don’t know what happened, I need your help,” multiple times.
“His left side of his face was gigantic,” Burks told The CW. “The jacket he was wearing and his headphones were completely drenched in blood, the bottom half of his face was completely covered in blood; he was bleeding badly from his lip. He had clearly been badly beaten.”
