YouTube has created YouTube Capture and perhaps as an answer to Tout.com, Viddy, Social Cam, and other smartphone-based camcorder devices. Whatever the case, it’s an easy to use app, but does have some challenges.
First, what this blogger likes about the app is its simplicity of use. Second, it’s available only on the iPhone and was obviously designed to fit well within the iPhone’s “ease of use” design ethic – it looks like it could have been developed by Apple.
Third, it does work, but here’s where some small problems are evident.
Unlike Tout, which is limited to 15 seconds, YouTube Capture doesn’t appear to have a video-length limit. That translates into a near three-hour upload wait time for a video of just 74 seconds in length. By contrast, Tout.com is about 5 minutes or so in good wifi connection conditions.
Then there’s the lack of tungsten light color correction and because of that, I come out as The Orange Man!
YouTube Capture is a great tool for quick uploads from your iPhone, but only if you keep the videos at not more than 30 seconds. With that, there’s another issue:
YouTube Monetization Is Turned Off
The video you upload if you’re a YouTube Partner is not automatically set to be monetized, you have to do that. That’s different than the default setting for a video uploaded via your computer. Why this is, I don’t know.
Will I use YouTube Capture more? Yes, I will – I know it’s limits, but I like Tout.com’s picture quality much better. Unfortunately, I can’t directly upload my Touts to YouTube.
