cumberbatch__spanA few members of the science-fiction entertainment press were invited to a private screening of nine-minutes of footage from the much-anticipated Star Trek: Into Darkness, the sequel that’s not really a sequel to the 2009 Star Trek.

Prior to Wednesday, the first teaser video released December 6th introduced a villain that too many media-types wanted to be Khan, even though the guy looked nothing like Khan. I thought he was Gary Mitchell:

He’s a white guy; Khan’s Middle Eastern / Spanish mix and has been played by the late, legendary Ricardo Montalban.

For which we have to see a video from Star Trek…

But the latest news reveals the character played by Benedict Cumberbatch is neither, but a man named John Harrison. There’s no obvious reach back into the Star Trek universe, and given than there is a Dr. Carol Markus in this one, it would seem that this Harrison fellow is a composite of Khan and Mitchell.

And given that the photo has him in the first scene of a brig associated with J.J. Abrams Star Trek, he’s a pretty powerfully awful guy.

Stay tuned for more..
