Cal’s Sandy Barbour has copied Stanford University’s lead and hired the same search firm and man The Cardinal used to find then-Head Coach Jim Harbaugh.
Embeded in Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour’s press conference to announce that Cal Football Head Coach Jeff Tedford was terminated from duties is her statement that the selection process for the next person to helm the Golden Bears will be aided by DHR International, an executive search firm.
A visit to the DHR International website reveals that they have a special sports division that has worked to place coaches at The University of Kansas, University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac University, and Stanford University, to name the more notable assignments.
Glenn Sugiyama’s the practice head, has worked for DHR International for eight years, and is described by Forbes as a kind of “hired gun” in his line of work. He’s found Charlie Weis for Kansas, Randy Edsall for Maryland, and Johnny Dawkins (Stanford Basketball) and Coach Harbaugh for Stanford.
Glen’s Linkedin summary reads as follows:
In addition to my senior positions at Leo Burnett, I have spent over 10 years in the hospitality industry and was President and CEO of a full-service restaurant chain. In addition, I was President of a commercial real estate company and EVP/COO of a 14 state service company with over 5000 employees. In addition to serving on the Boards of the University of Illinois College of Commerce and Business Administration and the NBA Chicago Bulls, I bring a very diverse background to any search that you may be considering. However, I will also team with a “specialists” partner anytime the search is not in my specific area of expertise.
In addition, Glen received his BS at Michigan State University in 1980, lives in Chicago, and lists Sandy Barbour as one of his connections on the business social media site. As one interesting tidbit, at 27, he was named a member of The Board of Directors of the former world champion Chicago Bulls.
