You have to admire the way MTV gets social media, and specifically Twitter. Today’s the day of the telecast of the Heidi Klum-hosted MTV Europe Music Awards from Frankfurt, Germany, and already, even with Sunday NFL Games underway, MTV manages to take over part of the Twitter Top Trends.

But before we go further, what’s the deal with the MTV Europe Music Awards blowing up in our social media face like this, anyway? The show was started in 1994 to celebrate the best music videos from artists in Europe.

But, really starting last year, the MTV EMA’s have became a big deal in pop culture. And by that, I mean so big that it’s starting to rival the U.S. MTV Award Shows. And there’s a good reason for that, and it goes back to how this post was started.

The Worldwide growth of digital media.

While numerical absorbtion numbers are hard to come by, we can point to the fact that online video growth has fueled Worldwide interest in entertainment. According to a recent study, online video growth is the largest component of global internet traffic. And that means more people around the World are being moved by videos like Gangnum Style by Psy. And you can’t talk about Gangnum Style without showing the video, which has been seen over 700 million times as of this writing:

So, it’s fitting that MTV would be the first place Korean music star Psy would do a live performance of his hit, and that’s tonight on the MTV Europe Music Awards.

But while Psy’s warming up to make his TV debut, the Twitterverse is pushing for that new boy band One Direction to get the top award.

Got to hand to to One Direction for going from unknown to annoying (because of their constant exposure) in such a short span of time.

Just saying. But the Twitter teens are in love with One Direction.

Stay tuned.
