Steve Sabol passed away after an 11 month battle with brain cancer, and a brain tumor that could not be removed.

Mr. Sabol was President of NFL Films, the company started by his father, Ed Sabol. His impact on American Culture was nothing short of incredible. Steve, who was 69, helped usher in the era of televised football, and gave great imagery to some of the most iconic moments in sports history, from the “Holly Roller” game to “The Immaculate Reception.”

He was also a nice man.

I had the pleasure of meeting Steve while at University Of Phoenix Stadium in 2008, and for the Super Bowl pitting the New York Giants against the New England Patriots. Steve happened to be taking a walk along the upper deck, so I went over and thanked him for his contribution to American Culture, then talk about Twitter and YouTube and what we then called “New Media.” “Yeah, I’ve got to get more into New Media,” Mr. Sabol said. And we proceeded to have a good talk about what YouTube was all about.

Steve Sabol, RIP.
