IT’S A DISASTER. Well, not really at Comic Con.

I was given the pleasure of previewing a new movie by the LA comedy group called The Vacationers, called IT’S A DISASTER. They describe the film in this way:

IT’S A DISASTER is a new end-of-the world comedy from the twisted minds of The Vacationeers comedy group. The film-which also stars Julia Stiles, David Cross, America Ferrera, and Erinn Hayes-is about four couples gathering for Sunday brunch unaware that the apocalypse is happening outside their door. It recently world premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival to rave reviews (The Hollywood Reporter calling it “the funniest film of recent vintage”).

I’m not sure if it’s the funniest, but IT’S A DISASTER is very good. What I liked about this ensemble cast was the way they interacted within a small setting. Really about 80 percent of the movie happens in two rooms: the living room and the dining room. What’s happening outside is what seems to be a terrorist nuclear “dirty bomb” attack that killed the people next door. I liked the snappy dialog and the thought-provolking circumstances the friends find themselves in – especially at the end of the movie. What I can best say about IT’S A DISASTER, is that it’s watchable and unforgettable.

I just had one problem.

The cast, with the exception of America Ferrera, was all white, and so lost a chance to really show how Americans regardless of color deal with this situation. Moreover, and for me more to the point, is that I relate to the people in the movie, and do in many films going all the way back (for me) to Woody Allen’s Hanna And Her Sisters. But the movies almost never have African Americans in them – leading the young and unexposed mind to think that the way the people in the movie IT’S A DISASTER live and think is a “white thing” rather than an American thing.

See?

Other than that, I loved IT’S A DISASTER, and look forward to meeting the people involved with it here at Comic Con. And on that note they will have a panel called “THE VACATIONEERS panel” on Friday, July 13th at 8:00pm at Room 6 AB at the San Diego Convention Center.

Stay tuned.
