A friend of mine, a good friend of this blogger, just returned from spending a good year in Ecuador. Her report was that she enjoyed the people she met, but the family was less than honest, and President Rafael Correa is running the country “like a dictator.”
“He’s put the clamps on free speech,” she said. “People are afraid to say anything against him.” And that confirms all that I have blogged about Ecuador over time, and basically calls liars of the people who try to paint Ecuador as if it’s some kind of paradise in the Chevron Ecuador lawsuit issue.
And since people in Ecuador are scared of Correa, it stands to reason that its own court system has the same fears of its leader. So, with that, how the hell can anyone say the Ecuador court cleanly ruled against Chevron? You can’t. It was a sham decision in a nation that fears what its leader would do if the verdict were in Chevron’s favor.
