According to a press release from Coorigan Sports, the producers of The Oakland Running Festival that was held March 26th, and which includes the Oakland Marathon and 5K, ran up (How’s that nod to Old Media?) a $3.5 million economic impact for Oakland. Here’s the release:

Baltimore, MD (April 5th, 2012)–The third annual Oakland Running Festival (ORF) contributed an estimated $3.5 million to the city’s and state’s economy according to a recent study by the Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI), an economic research and consulting firm located at Towson University in Towson, Md. Despite gloomy forecasted weather conditions forrace day this year’s event attracted a record 8,211 runners, marking the second consecutive year of at least 10% growth.

ORF also generated more than $300,000 for local charities including the EllaBaker Center for Human Rights, Running for a Better Oakland, Oakland Rising, the Child Abuse Listening, Interviewing and Coordination Center, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, and Team in Training. Close to $800,000 has been raised for charities since the event’s inaugural year.

Stay tuned.
