The Golden Globes discovers YouTube! Film awards season’s getting off to its normally exciting start, and it’s great to see the Hollywood Foreign Press Association getting into the new media act!
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) President Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly. has asked Gerard Butler, Woody Harrelson, Rashida Jones and Sofia Vergara to announce the first half of the nominations for the 69th Annual Golden Globe® Awards in Beverly Hills today. The full list is interesting.
The Artist, a surprising silent black and white film, leads all movies in with six nominations, followed by the George Clooney coming-of-middle age film The Descendants, and the excellent fictional account of black / white relationships in the 1960s South, The Help, with five nominations each. All are up for Best Picture. Here’s the list:

And for Best Actress, Viola Davis and Rooney Mara gets their first noms for The Help and The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, respectively. Here’s that list:
For Best Actor, George Clooney (The Descendants) is up against Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Michael Fassbender (Shame), and Ryan Gosling (The Ides Of March) for the award. The front runner has to be DiCaprio for his stirring representation of the controversial head of the FBI, but there’s a lot of talk about Michael Fassbender in Shame.
And if you’re keeping track of such things, The Weinstein Company is back on top, again, with a total of 10 noms, followed by Sony Pictures Classics with 10, and Touchstone Pictures with 8 nominations.
