According to an email from CNN, Saif Al-Islam Gadhafi, who’s name translates to “Sword of Islam,” was captured. During the reign of his father, Moammar Gadhafi, Saif Al-Islam was widely considered to be his successor. He was part of his dad’s “inner circle” performing public ceremonial duties.

His history reads very much like that of Saddam Hussein’s son Uday Hussein, who was known for treating civilians with a high-handed contempt that was at times criminal.

Here’s the CNN message:

Saif Al-Islam Gadhafi

Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of slain Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, has been captured in the Libyan desert after weeks on the run, senior military commanders said Saturday.

He was captured by revolutionary fighters in the western town of Obari, near the Algerian border, the commanders told CNN.

Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, who was named in an Interpol arrest warrant in September, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution.

His father was killed last month near Sirte after his capture by forces loyal to the National Transitional Council.

Stay tuned.
