In a wild game that was entirely different than any the previously played contests the formerly undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions played, they lost at home to Nebraska 17 to 14. It was the first game that Coach Paterno was not on the sidelines for since 1965, and in the wake of his shocking dismissal by the Board of Trustees of Penn State.
It was a hard game to watch because of the circumstances under which it was being played. But, with all of the crap the student-athletes had to deal with that week, including losing their leader Paterno because he was fired, they played well and almost came back and won a game where it looked like they were about to be blown out of the stadium.
Someone forgot to tell Nebraska to lay down for Penn State. Instead, the Cornhuskers went against type and shocked the Nittany Lions, throwing on almost every down. By half-time they were up 17-14.
Interim Head Coach Tom Bradley made the right adjustments; Penn State came out, throwing, running reverses and trick plays, and pulled to 17-14. But with 49 seconds remaining and bad clock management, Penn State came up short.
