Judge Jason B Thompson Interview Fayette County Fayetteville GA

judgeJudge Jason B Thompson was elected State Court Judge of Fayette County May of 2014. In this 10 minute interview, Judge Thompson talks about his path to the bench and gives advice to law students, like my good friend Emily Ittner, who’s into her third year of law school.

“Emily,” Judge Thompson said “I need a replacement in a few years, so hopefully you can come over here.” Judge Thompson is a study in how establishing and maintaining good personal relationships can work for you in all aspects of life. He graduated law school in 2001, met his wife while in law school, and she is now a prosecutor assigned to his Courtroom B at Fayette County Courthouse.

His path to the judgeship is also marked by personal relationships. He became a part time judge after a call by the Mayor of Peachtree City, Georgia. Then, as judges are elected in Fayette County, he twice successfully ran for office, most recently to become Fayette County Magistrate Court Judge. Then, Governor Nathan Deal called and elevated Judge Thompson to his current post, which he calls “the best job I’ve ever had.”

For anyone just coming out of law school, Judge Thompson says you should work for a more senior lawyer “find a mentor” – unless you are going to work in a district attorney’s office, which provides another path. “Get to know the local judges” he advises, and come to their courts early and watch what they do.
