National Donut Day, Krispy Kreme, “Zombie Attack”, and Green Lantern Gay are the Google Trends for June 1st.
Of them, National Donut Day and Krispy Kreme were the most fun to talk about because, to this blogger, it couldn’t be done without actually eating a donut on National Donut Day. No, I didn’t go to Krispy Kreme; I went to a Duncan Donuts store in Suburban Atlanta, and just in time, because I got one of the few donuts remaining on the shelf.
National Donut Day is a wonderful, totally corporate marketing holiday created out of an American love for donuts. Let’s face it: the popularity of National Donut Day was affirmed by the fact that it remained at the number one position as a Google Trend for the entire Friday that was the holiday.
Well, ok, it wasn’t a holiday in the normal sense of the word, but it was a day to take advantage of special donut deals – all the better to make an already fat America fatter. But the best remedy isn’t to outlaw the day, but to have a “National Veggie Day” or “National Spinach Day.” All of this is making me hungry.
But it’s not making me hungry enough to be a Zombie or go on a “Zombie Attack” or praise the “Zombie Apocalypse.” That refers not only to the attack by the now dead Rudy Eugene, who was shot by Miami Police after being caught in the middle of eating the face of Ronald Poppo, but also another act of canibalism by some brother named Alexander Kinyua, who ate his roommate’s brain and heart in Maryland.
Why can’t these sick brothers do something constructive like go and eat racists like Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh?
Green Lantern Gay
Lastly for this round of Google Trends we have the news that DC Comics recast Green Lantern Allan Scott as Gay. Why did they do this? Well, social change and the acceptance of Gays and Lesbians is the answer. But I have to say this annoyed me because I don’t like the practice of reforming a known character into something else, in this case Gay; I prefer a whole new character. I don’t care if the idea would have been to make Allan Scott Latino or Black, it’s still wrong in my book – make a new character. Moreover, just because Allan Scott is a Gay Green Lantern doesn’t mean I want to see how he does his personal life in comic book form. That’s just me; I don’t like seeing anyone get it on, let alone guys. Having said that, it’s a good nod toward social change.
