Mad Men Season 5 starts with a new, improved Don Draper. I think. Maybe.
Yes, hindsight – in this case the hindsight of massive cultural change – provides a different perspective for what Don Draper (John Hamm) might be headed for in his very open relationship with his secretary now wife Megan (Jessica Pare). For the first time Draper’s seemingly not able to separate his work life from his personal life and that’s because there is no firewall separating the two. Both worlds have been smashed together and it’s not hard to see the formation of what could be a disastrous conclusion to it down the road.
While Don Draper would think he has the power in his relationship with his wife, it’s Megan who has him by the you-know-what. She can drop everything and go home, and so his World stops, and he leaves the office to see after her. She wants sex, and so manipulates him into giving it to her, perhaps to fill some emptiness caused by low self-esteem.
No matter how you turn this Don and Megan picture, the end configuration always comes up some color of bad.
So far. Well, it’s episode one: ‘A Little Kiss.’
Stay tuned.
